Emergency lights and exit signs need batteries to operate when power is lost during an emergency. These batteries provide illumination for 90 minutes for both types of fixtures.

As a general rule of thumb, most exit signs use Light Emitting Diodes (LED) to illuminate the sign and use Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cad) batteries. Ni-Cad batteries are small and compact, like AA batteries shrink wrapped together, and come in different configurations to fit a variety of fixtures. Individual Ni-Cad cells are 1.2v and multiplied by the number of cells in the package. A 4.8v battery is composed of 4 cells at 1.2v each.

Emergency lights require more powerful batteries than exit sign LEDs because they use incandescent lamps that are brighter and draw more electricity. Sealed Lead Acid batteries are used to power emergency lights for 90 minutes after power loss. The 6v 4.5 amp Sealed Lead Acid battery is used in most emergency lights and combo exit signs with attached lights, making it one of our most versatile batteries.
