Overview

HZX style exit signs are available in Class 1 Division 1 and Class 1 Division 2 styles. These hazardous location exit signs must be installed in locations where explosive gas and vapors are concentrated in the atmosphere and can be exploded if exposed to an electrical spark. These and other explosion proof exit signs are hermetically sealed to prevent their circuitry from causing such a disaster.

Divisions  denote the likelihood of such gases being present during day-to-day operations. Division 1 is the most serious environment, as these gases are always present. Division 2 areas don't usually contain such materials, though sudden introduction could occur at any time.
