Overview
All emergency lights and exit signs must carry a UL 924 Listing which, among other tests, certifies the unit can meet the Underwriter's Laboratories 90 minute lighting requirement. But there are some facilities that need a much longer lighting runtime that normal emergency fixtures cannot provide.

Application
Ultimately you must decide if a 6 hour emergency lighting fixture is right for your facility. If you've experienced momentary power failures in which some areas took longer than 90 minutes to evacuate, you'll definitely want a longer runtime. Generally, 6 hour lights are only required in certain key spaces and not the entire building.
These steel emergency lights take sealed lead acid batteries which need a full day to charge. In a rolling blackout, 90-minute batteries will drain after two hours and won't continue to light if intermittent blackouts continue. If you are in a building or section of town that experiences sporadic rolling blackouts, six hour emergency lights are a good way to keep the place lit.
Multi-story dormitories, hotels and apartments can also be a good placed for 6 hour emergency lights. Even if the building has a full emergency system including exit signs and klaxons, you will invariably have many heavy sleepers as well as the elderly and disabled who will require assistance to exit the building.
Construction
These units are built with a 20-gauge steel housing, powder-coated with a baked enamel finish that protects the unit from rust. Dual Par36 style, 9-watt lamp heads are constructed form high impact thermoplastic, are fully directional and typically side or top mounted.
6 hour fixtures can be modified to fit any lighting need, large or small. Other wattages may be used including 12, 18, 25, 30, 35, 55, and even 70-watt lamp heads. Just note the more light you want will diminish the emergency battery runtime . Going with a lower wattage, say in a compact space, will actually extend the unit's runtime well past 6 hours.
Options
Self-Testing - Self-diagnostic testing that eliminates monthly and yearly battery backup tests and will alert the user to any problems regarding operational functionality of the unit.
Time-Delay - Ideal for installations that are utilize HID general lighting purposes. The time delay feature keeps the emergency lights illuminated for a preset period (usually 15 minutes) after power is restored since fluorescent and HID lighting can take 10-15 minutes to reach full brightness, even after a short power failure.
Nickel Cadmium Battery -Ni-Cad batteries have a 5-7 year lifespan, are easier to replace, and decrease shipping weight. They carry the same wattage capacity as sealed-lead acid batteries, though not the amperage load needed to power a third remote head.
